Don’t know about you, but Halloween and Christmas are two of my favourite times of the year.
What you might not be aware of is: I was born on 31st October 1984, which means that on Halloween Day (this coming Monday and one more nights’ sleep she says with excitement) I shall celebrate my 32nd birthday.
So you could say from a very early childhood age I have been accustomed to having ‘double whammy‘ joint celebrations for my birthday and Halloween. Being a family planning freak of nature has been out with my control, that’s just the way its rolled!
There has been even more Halloween excitement this year with the launch of my new website www.bygemmal.co.uk and business pages on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and instagram. You could say I’ve been just a little bit busy with the family home, cooking, cleaning, ironing, washing, nursery runs, shopping, looking after my two lovely stepsons, Forbes (10), Findlay (9) and their sister, Lillie (4), and walking the dog (“G“), a pure white German Shepherd who casts hair everywhere.
My husband, Mathew, wonders what I do all day. My response to that is, take a day off work and I’ll put my feet up and he can literally step into my shoes. Meantime, he better be trying to knock up the brownie points by ensuring my family and I have a memorable birthday on Monday or I’ll be going on strike! There seems to be a lot of whispering going on between the four of them, so plans are underway and although there might be “pinky promises” involved, I am sure it will only be a matter of time before my daughter, Lillie, lets the ‘cat out of the bag’.
As I said, things have been a bit of a whirlwind the past 2-3 weeks and I am absolutely delighted as to how my small business has taken off. In addition to having a number of bookings for just now, the pleasing aspect is repeat and recommended business, with bookings taken for weddings and children’s face painting parties taken for up to September 2017 for my make-up artist and hair up services in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
Yesterday was just a typical example of how enjoyable and inspiring my work is. I had five new clients to look after ranging from Cove in the south side of the city of Aberdeen over to Dyce in the North East area of Aberdeen. What is it they say? Have tools will travel.
Such recent work was diverse. Two clients were attending a Halloween Party. The other three customers were attending a wedding at The Marriot, Dyce. Work was undertaken at the client’s home and within a hotel room. I was pleased that my customers were delighted with what I had done for them, and I have positively secured repeat business bookings for November.
For me personally, it is not just about the business and earning a livelihood (and putting food on the table & clothes on my children’s backs which everyone has to do). I am doing something that I am very passionate about and it is important to me that my clients feel special and glamorous attending their special occasions and this inspired look holds up. This should be reflected in the selfies and photographs for wedding family albums, for example.
I feel so fortunate, humble and privileged to have met the people I have over the last 2-3 weeks as part of my business taking off. I have already had loads of fun and memorable moments with these customers. Customers which I consider to be now more than just clients, but new friends.
As you can imagine when supplying a complete beauty service – make-up and hair up – it is essential that I try and assist clients as much as possible. It is important for me to know what bag, shoes, dress, &c., so that the hair, make-up and clothing are aligned. No point in doing make-up that clashes with the hen shine or engagement party attire or with the bridal party dresses. I feel this is one of my strongest selling points, whereby my customers cost effectively use one person to deliver a fabulous look, with minimum stress as opposed to engaging separate make-up artist and hair stylist.
I look forward to publishing several blogs over the coming weeks whereby perspective customers can see ‘before‘ and ‘after‘ make-up and hair up results, and the subsequent Reviews provided by customers. It is easy to ‘talk the talk’ as opposed to ‘walking the walk’. Don’t know about you, but I am a frequent user of Trip Advisor. I feel these type of ‘real’ experiences and feedback can give perspective clients a ‘feel’ for how focussed I am on YOUR requirements, listening to what YOU are looking for, and being inspired by this.
I have been asked if I work on a Sunday as my fellow-peers in the make-up and hairdressing industry often work on a Saturday. This means they go out socially on Sunday and they are off on a Monday. I can confirm that I do work on a Sunday and will be able to look after such TLC pampering requirements.
